Where Is Crystal Beach in Ottawa?

One of the many things we love about Ottawa is all of the unique and exciting communities it has to offer. If you want a bustling lifestyle full of trendy shopping and fabulous dining, there’s an Ottawa neighbourhood for you.
Do you prefer a peaceful environment with quiet streets and picturesque scenery? It’s all right here, with an almost rural atmosphere that is mere minutes away from all the excitement.
For people who can’t get enough of the water and the riverside shoreline, Crystal Beach and Lakeview Park offer an ideal combination of nature, recreation and community. What is it like to live in or visit one of Ottawa’s most established west-end neighbourhoods? Today, we’ll take you on a tour of where our long-time team member, Patti Brown, is thrilled to call home.

The One and Only Crystal Beach of Ottawa
Crystal Beach is often considered interchangeable with Lakeview, its eastern neighbour, to form one larger, cohesive community. Both are under the umbrella of the Crystal Beach Lakeview Community Association. The community was originally developed in the 1960s and today includes a mix of established residential streets, newer infill homes and renovated properties.
To the east, Bayshore offers “Ottawa’s favourite mall,” with additional amenities along nearby Carling Avenue, including Cineplex Cinemas Ottawa, better known locally as the Coliseum.
The Ottawa River is straight north, boasting the stunning shorelines Crystal Beach and Lakeview are named after. Though it’s not one of Ontario’s world-famous Great Lakes, the name “Lakeview” absolutely fits due to its location at Lac Deschênes, the widest part of the river.
This type of water body is known as a “fluvial lake,” a lake within a river. As a globally significant Important Bird Area, it’s one of the best places to observe our beautiful feathered friends. These include songbirds like Warblers and Vireos, as well as Ring-billed gulls, Herring gulls, and thousands of waterbird species.

Experience Nature Right in the City
With pathways and trails throughout the area, Crystal Beach is a natural fit for cyclists, hikers, and anyone who enjoys getting outdoors. The shores of the Ottawa River offer plenty of opportunities to experience nature close to home, with abundant birdlife and the chance to spot amphibians, reptiles, and other wildlife along the shoreline and surrounding green spaces.
Crystal Beach is an outdoorsy, one-of-a-kind Ottawa neighbourhood that offers a peaceful, natural setting less than 20 minutes from the downtown core. It is not to be confused with Crystal Beach in Fort Erie, Niagara. While both communities are located near spectacular bodies of water, they are two different cities and more than 500 km apart.
A Haven for Boating of All Types
Lac Deschênes is 44 km long and spans three km at its widest point, making it a respectable body of water perfect for boating! It’s no wonder that this area is officially home to the Nepean Sailing Club, which hosts training camps and races.
Though “sailing” is in the name, boating enthusiasts of all passions share the water, and dinghies, keelboats, catamarans, and powerboats are all a common sight. The club welcomes enthusiasts of all levels, from those who just earned a license to the seasoned professional who feels more comfortable on water than on land!
Our favourite fluvial lake also happens to be a popular destination for those who love to fish, particularly for Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Walleye. You can cast your line from the rocky shoreline at Dick Bell Park; otherwise, you can see where you’ll likely get the most bites by checking with local fishing sites and apps.

Other Must-See Amenities and Attractions in Crystal Beach
An abundance of water activities is just one of the joys of living in Ottawa, and Crystal Beach offers plenty of other amenities and points of interest to enjoy. With parks, pathways, recreational facilities and green spaces throughout the neighbourhood, many of the area’s attractions are centred around an active, outdoor lifestyle.
Maki Park is just one example, featuring a children’s playground, a baseball field for the summer, and an outdoor skating rink for the winter. Nearby, Andrew Haydon Park stretches along the Ottawa River and offers stunning landscaping grounds, waterside views and a bandshell for outdoor concerts and community events.
For a quieter, more picturesque setting, head to Barry Mullen Park, where a 2.5 km loop provides a scenic route for walking, snowshoeing and mountain biking. And when it’s time to head out for dinner or a night on the town, a variety of restaurants are within walking distance or just a short drive away.
Crystal Beach is particularly appealing to those who enjoy an active lifestyle. Whether you’re cycling the pathways, walking through the parks or heading out for a run, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors and stay active without stepping inside a gym.
