We often talk about how much Canada’s capital city has to offer. How could we not? Ottawa is a safe, welcoming, and fun place to be, with a fascinating history that predates Canada itself.

Other cities might happily proclaim how picturesque and scenic they are. Ottawa proves it every day with its protected Greenbelt and the annual Tulip Festival showcasing millions of beautiful, colourful blooms.

Now, all that’s left is to get you here. To make your transition as joyful and seamless as possible, here is a comprehensive checklist for moving to Ottawa.

Start With a Plan

Relocating always comes with several moving pieces to juggle all at once. A successful strategy begins with listing out everything that you know you will eventually have to do.

Seeing it all clearly laid out on paper will help you figure out a timeline of what needs to happen and when. This list will incorporate things like arranging for childcare or pet sitting, collecting boxes and packing tape, decluttering your belongings, and so on.

If you’re planning to sell or buy a home, the project can be even more involved. If that’s the case, connecting with a real estate agent you trust is an essential first step.

Will your relocation involve selling your existing home? If so, the posts below can help you stay organized and make informed decisions:

Expect the Unexpected

It’s one thing to have a detailed plan and checklist all based on a realistic timeline and budget. However, no matter how meticulous you are, something unexpected can always pop up. That’s why you should remain flexible and always prepared to pivot when needed.

To paraphrase that old saying, “it’s better to have a backup plan (or two) and not need it than to need one and not have it.” If everything goes exactly as planned, great! If not, you’ll be ready to navigate those last-minute hiccups.

Your “Ready For Anything” Checklist

Have movers, contractors, and cleaners on standby.

If you need to speed up the process, trained professionals are your best bet. When working with an established real estate agent, you’ll have access to trusted professionals every step of the way.

Start packing early.

This step often takes longer than many people realize. By starting early and doing a little each day, you can avoid a last-minute scramble.

Label your boxes.

Nearly everyone who packs early will inevitably have an item they haven’t needed for years, until it’s packed away and taped up in a box. (Extra points if that box is also somewhere inaccessible, like up in the attic or in the rafters over the garage.)

You might think that detailed labels are an easy and obvious answer. As long-time Ottawa real estate agents, we can assure you that many people get so busy during their move that they do overlook this step. Bonus tip: make sure the labels are facing out and easy to read. This also tends to be forgotten.

Book movers and contractors ahead of time.

Depending on when you need them, contractors and moving companies can be very busy. To ensure you make it onto their schedule, be sure to contact them well in advance.

Make a list of service providers.

If you’re relocating to a new city, you will likely need new Internet and utility services. You may also have to switch doctors, dentists, and other service providers. It’s a good idea to get in touch beforehand. That way, you’ll be ready to connect as soon as you move in.

Your 48 Hours Moving Checklist

Keep your essentials in a separate box.

Setting aside everything you need for the last 48 hours in your current home and the first 48 hours in your new one is a sanity-saver on moving day. Now, you won’t have to frantically search for your shampoo, pyjamas, or your child’s favourite toy. Everything you need will be right there, when you need it.

Pack a cooler for moving day.

If you’ll be driving for some time, you will need refreshments. Stopping for a sit-down meal might not fit into a hectic schedule, and takeout meals can be expensive, not to mention unhealthy.

A cooler full of nutritious snacks will help keep your energy up and the mood light.

Checklist for Settling In

Once your home sells and you’re set to arrive in Ottawa, you can take a moment and congratulate yourself. While you still have some work ahead of you, the hectic part of your transition is over.

Still, there are some steps that will make your first few hours in your new home more comfortable. One last tip is to set up the bedrooms first, followed by the kitchen table.

That way, if the little ones need to nap, they can do so in peace and quiet. With those tasks complete, you have what matters most: a comfortable place to eat and sleep.

With everything else, you can take your time. Unpack, get organized, and settle into your home at your leisure. When you’re ready for a break, exploring your neighbourhood is a great way to refresh!
