The neighbourhood offers something for just about everyone.
Do you want to know more about what it’s like to live in Ottawa? The posts below will help you see the potential:
Great Schools
As a sought-after family-friendly neighbourhood in one of Canada’s top cities, the Civic Hospital Area naturally offers access to excellent schools. Whether you have a child in elementary school and wish to give them a French language advantage or you prefer a Catholic or private education, you have options!
Many neighbourhood schools come with high scores from the Fraser Institute and the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). Catchment areas can change from time to time, so be sure to check with the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board or the Ottawa Catholic School Board for up-to-date information. While you’re online, you can also see what resources and extra-curricular activities are available.
Safe, Beautiful Parks
In keeping with the family-friendly theme, the Civic Hospital Area is home to some fantastic parks for children to explore and play in when they are not in class. These relaxing spaces are also perfect for picnics, sitting on a bench for people-watching, getting lost in your favourite book, or for walking your four-legged family members. In other words, they’re not just for kids, they’re for anyone who appreciates spending time in nature. A few examples right close to home include:
Reid Park is adjacent to the Elmdale Lawn Bowling Club and offers a wading pool for little ones, basketball nets for older children, plus a dog park. All in all, it’s a fun spot for the whole family.
Princess Marguerite Park (formerly Fairmont Park) features a kids’ playground, tennis/pickleball courts, and yet another dog park. (We do love our pets in this neighbourhood!) There’s a skating rink in the winter, which means you might actually start looking forward to the colder weather. This is also the site of the annual Pumpkins in the Park event, which Chell Team is proud to sponsor.
EV Temblay Park boasts a great playground for kids, plus a wading pool to cool off in, as well as basketball courts where teens can shoot some hoops. You’ll also find another skating rink here, which is ideal for brisk winter afternoons.
World-Class Medical Care
The neighbourhood takes its name from the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital. As such, access to excellent healthcare is a given. This facility provides the only adult care trauma centre in the region, as well as cardiac care through the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
The hospital isn’t your only option for medical care. You’ll find a variety of practitioners in and within a short drive, including walk-in clinics, family practices, pediatricians, and more.
Non-Stop Fun and Excitement
It’s reassuring to live in an area with close proximity to excellent schools and state-of-the-art medical care. However, this peaceful residential enclave is more exciting than you realize!
Another major advantage is the neighbourhood’s central location. Downtown Ottawa, Westboro, Wellington Village, Hintonburg, and Carleton University are all just minutes away, making it easy to enjoy everything the city has to offer.
Within a short walk or an even shorter bike ride or drive, you could be dining at one of our favourite local restaurants or taking in a little live entertainment at neighbouring venues like The Gladstone Theatre, Orpheus Musical Theatre, and the Great Canadian Theatre Company.
There’s also great news if you can’t decide whether you want dinner or a show. At Murder Mystery Ottawa, you can dig into great eats while you watch for clues and figure out “whodunit.”
For engaging entertainment that goes beyond simple movie nights, you could always aim for a strike at a nearby bowling alley or test your skills under pressure in an escape room. Thanks to close proximity to Downtown Ottawa, there is never a shortage of fun things to do when you live in the Civic Hospital Area.
Stable Home Values
Real estate prices will fluctuate anywhere depending on the market and what is happening in the economy overall. The Civic Hospital Area has historically remained one of Ottawa’s most sought-after neighbourhoods, helping support long-term demand for homes in the area. The neighbourhood offers a mix of condos and a few townhouses, but is primarily known for single family detached homes.
Many of these are character homes built in the 1930s and 1940s , complete with generous-sized lots with beautiful curb appeal, and set back from the street, making them great for families. Homeowners here tend to place a high priority on beautiful landscaping. If you’re familiar with Toronto, think of the Leaside or Forest Hill neighbourhoods; there’s a similar tranquillity and high-end vibe throughout the Civic Hospital Area.

Indescribable Scenery
When we say that the Civic Hospital Area is scenic, we might actually win the “understatement of the year” award. You’ll just have to come and see the stunning parks, breathtaking trails, and landscaping for yourself.
The picturesque beauty here is indescribable. Nevertheless, we’ll do our best to put it into words:
The Central Experimental Farm is a working facility right in the heart of Ottawa. It’s a research centre for agricultural scientists to develop more sustainable and higher-yielding crops, but it’s also one of our most beloved attractions and historic sites.
The farm is open to the public, and visitors can tour the Tropical Greenhouse, along with various gardens, an arboretum, and a host of designated federal heritage buildings.
Commissioners Park is located right on Dow Lake, and is the site of the annual Tulip Festival. This is a local favourite for getting out to explore nature, whether that means strolling the winding paths, admiring the gardens or watching non-motorized boats float along the water.
If you want to relax in a natural oasis where your four-legged friend can join you, head on over to Hampton Park. This century-old park is a favourite spot for humans and canines alike, thanks to its sprawling fields, wooded trails, and a leash-free area.

The Civic Hospital Area tends to be a little more residential, and there aren’t as many shops and restaurants as you’d find in Hintonburg or Wellington Village. Parking is also limited on many streets close to the hospital itself.
That said, many residents prefer to skip driving and get out for longer walks while enjoying the scenery. On foot, you can reach some of Ottawa’s trendiest hot spots in just a few blocks and less than 20 minutes.

Every neighbourhood comes with its own trade-offs, but for many residents, the combination of character homes, beautiful green spaces, excellent schools, world-class healthcare, and proximity to some of Ottawa’s most vibrant communities makes Civic Hospital a truly special place to call home.
