5 Reasons to Buy a Home in the Civic Hospital Area

When it comes to our favourite Ottawa neighbourhoods, we have a special place in our hearts for the Civic Hospital area. Our very own Susan Chell is a resident of this community and is active with the Civic Hospital Neighbourhood Association. She was also born in the neighbourhood’s namesake hospital!

The Civic Hospital community is an iconic Ottawa neighbourhood with a deep history. The wide, tree-lined streets, beautiful homes, and proximity to many of Ottawa’s best amenities make the Civic Hospital area a highly sought-after place to live.

You can learn more about buying a home in the Civic Hospital area in our blog post right here.

Here are our top 5 reasons to buy a home in the Civic Hospital area.

1. The Strong Community Vibe

As an established residential neighbourhood in Ottawa, there is a strong sense of community permeating this area. This is a place where people wave and say hello. You feel supported and surrounded by others who truly care about their neighbours and the community.

The Civic Hospital Neighbourhood Association (CHNA) is a great resource for all the happenings in the community. The CHNA can help you stay informed on everything from garbage collection schedules, information about proposed developments in the area, contact information for your municipal representatives, local events, and more.

The CHNA also hosts numerous events throughout the year, all to bring the community together. Events such as Pumpkins in the Park at Princess Margriet Park are highly anticipated each year where the Chell Team gets involved. We run a free pumpkin stand while collecting donations for local organizations like the Parkdale Food Centre.

Other local events include Capital Cleanup and the exciting CHNA Garage Sale

Additionally, the community is served by its local newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times, which highlights the important news items relevant to the area, while celebrating individuals in the community and promoting a culture of supporting local.

2. The Beautiful Homes

Whether driving, walking, or biking through the Civic Hospital neighbourhood, you’ll instantly recognize the iconic infrastructure and properties. The Civic Hospital area is known as one of the most beautiful and historic residential enclaves in Ottawa.

Homes are built in the “Arts and Crafts” style. Beautiful stonework, classically-styled windows and doors combined with lush landscaping, crawling ivy, and mature trees give the Civic Hospital neighbourhood a movie-like ambience. It’s an aesthetic that is both breathtaking and comforting.

Many of the homes in the neighbourhood were designed or inspired by David Younghusband, a local mid-century architect made famous for establishing the “Younghusband” home style that is so prominent throughout the community.

Most homes in the neighbourhood preserve the traditional aesthetic of the 1940’s and 1950’s, but many have been renovated inside. It’s quite common to see homes with perfect balance aesthetics, with modern features like stainless steel appliances, renovated bathrooms, and more.

3. The Spacious and Private Lots

If you are the type of person who enjoys sipping coffee in the morning in your outdoor oasis or perhaps taking a virtual meeting from your private veranda, you will be hard-pressed to find a neighbourhood with better lots.

With space coming at a premium these days, the Civic Hospital neighbourhood is unique in that you can still find fantastic, private lots while remaining relatively close to the city’s centre.

Many Civic Hospital homeowners love spending time in their backyards, and you can find numerous homes with beautiful, private, and well-appointed lots that are expertly landscaped.

The result is peace, quiet, tranquillity, and the feeling of living in the country while remaining close to your favourite urban amenities.

Speaking of local amenities…

4. The Experimental Farm is Just Around the Corner

One of the most unique aspects of living in Ottawa is finding the ideal blend of urban amenities and natural wonders. The Experimental Farm area does exactly that. Located within walking distance of the Civic, The Farm is an expansive network of gardens, paths, and agricultural grounds. Designated as a National Historic Site, The Experimental Farm is home to Ottawa landmarks like the Arboretum, Ornamental Gardens, and the Candian Agriculture and Food Museum.

Having such a beautiful and important landmark right in your backyard is great for Civic Hospital residents looking for places to jog, bike or just take a leisurely walk in nature. There’s even a wild fox that lives at the Farm and eagle-eyed residents can see him lounging around every now and then!

5. The Proximity to Other Trendy Neighbourhoods

The Civic Hospital community might have a reputation for being a quiet, dignified neighbourhood with older residents, but the truth is that it’s a vibrant and youthful community perfect for families and professionals looking to combine an idyllic residential lifestyle while remaining close to the city’s abundant resources.

In addition to the fantastic greenspace, dog parks, bike paths, and natural beauty, the Civic is also close to trendy neighbourhoods like Little Italy, Wellington West, and Westboro. These neighbourhoods are home to some of the best restaurants, cafes, and boutiques in Ottawa.
