Ottawa’s Fascinating History and Timeless Beauty

When pondering the pros and cons of living in Ottawa, few things rank higher than the spectacular sights and scenery. (Any long-time residents might be hard-pressed to come up with any “cons.” Unless you consider being so spoiled by the quality of life here that we’d never want to be anywhere else.)

Where should we begin when describing Ottawa’s incredible beauty? First, there’s the incredible, historic architecture. Then, there are gorgeous green spaces, rivers, and trails all around. As one of Canada’s oldest cities and part of the Green Belt, Ottawa offers truly breathtaking views, both natural and human-made.

The iconic parliament buildings are just one draw. The original buildings were first constructed between 1859 and 1865. That was before a fire destroyed the Centre Block in 1916.

But Canadians are not easily discouraged, and we promptly began reconstruction, which was completed in 1927. Today, these buildings overlook the Ottawa River, which combines the best of both architecture and natural scenery. No wonder people come from all over the country just to catch a glimpse of them!

Exploring Ottawa’s Spectacular Parks and Points of Interest

One of the things locals love most about living in Ottawa is how easy it is to access nature. Within minutes of downtown, you can find scenic trails, riverside parks, and quiet green spaces.

At Major Hill Park, you can view some of Ottawa’s best sights from a single vantage point. It’s a great spot to take in glorious gardens, lush trees and greenery, with Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal locks in the background.

Hogs Back Falls (also called the Prince of Wales Falls) is a series of roaring waterfalls along the Rideau River. This is an absolute must-visit landmark. You can stroll along the water’s edge, and even stop for a picnic to take in the sights and sounds. If you want a refreshing swim, Mooney’s Bay Beach is located a little to the north.

Rockcliffe Park and The Rockeries is an ideal spot if you want a scenic escape where you’re surrounded by nature as far as the eye can see. There are multi-use pathways to explore, with several lookout points that will have you reaching for your camera.

In the spring, the park comes alive with hundreds of thousands of daffodils, a truly unforgettable sight. The best part is this tranquil oasis is just a 10-minute drive from the city!
